Sex Sells. But Why Sell Yourself?

Photobucket

Coming from a female perspective, I’d quite like to watch a good action pact film minus a sex scene or nude scene. Very few film producers take the risk of putting an 'unattractive' actor in their film. Perhaps this is because sex sells: but does it anymore? Here’s a website that discusses that sex has become boring in film; http://arts.guardian.co.uk/filmandmusic/story/0,,1955156,00.html#article_continue

Sex sells effectively in today’s Western culture, why is this? I believe sex sells because when we watch film it’s primarily because we want to get away from our world and view someone else’s: and would we not all prefer to look at an attractive person? Not only this but Western culture is very much wound up on personal appearances and look up to the actors and actresses in film. Although, through many media reports; it is the very media that is taking a bad effect on people today; even to the extremes that people get such illnesses as anorexia nervosa, just so they can look like their idol.

Has cinema gone too far?

In general the large amount of slim, attractive and fashionable people in the media is setting unrealistic standards for citizens. But not only does film attempt to sell by putting sex in their work but numerous western films take racism too far.
Such as Borat:

In addition has horror gotten too realistic? Most of new horror films truly bring horror to meaning and studies suggest that some may even leave people psychologically harmed, not only is this a problem but people may be influenced by the ideas of the film. An underlying problem is that can people define real from what is not real anymore?

Unfortunately, movie producers want to titillate their audiences and are guilty of trying to corrupt the young, impressionable teenagers, not to mention the adults. Years ago, they didn't need to show sex the way they do today - they left everything to your own imagination. They had better actors with great story lines. There was quality in movie making - today, it is all garbage. They can't even come up with good story lines. They just don't have it in them to produce anything really worth seeing. Horror films are very similar these days for the most part they are done on green screens add to this the the femfatel and the odd chainsaw and they call this a horror movie i don't think so.

Sex does sell, producers jobs are to sell as much as possible. It is a formula which normally works. I agree it would be nice to see films without the chauvinistic male lead bedding a chick left right and centre but in some cases its a staple of the film. Take James Bond, if he stops sleeping with every lady he works with (except M) then you may as well take his tuxedo and martini off him.

As for the public being influenced by the media and celebrities etc. I believe it is their own fault. Society has a choice to do what they like, they have free will, they should make their own choices in connection to whats best for them. It is societys own fault that they allow hegemony to take place. "Britneys Preggers again? Well lets get up the duff" "whats that? Paris Hilton dropped a dress size? Wheres my slim fast?" this simplistic android type following of the celebrity and fashion does cause peer pressure and what not but anybody can say no.
